Types of Maryland Certificates
Maryland issues seven types of certificates.
For employees of the Baltimore City Public Schools
(City Schools), the Office of Certification acts as your liaison with the Maryland State
Department of Education (MSDE). Staff in our office will obtain,
from you, all documents necessary to request your initial,
reinstated, or renewed Maryland certificate.
Remember that ALL certificates have an issuance
date of July 1 and January 1. If your employment begins between
the dates of July 1 and December 31, you will have an issuance
date of July 1. If your employment begins between
the dates of January 1 and June 30, you will have an issuance
dates of January 1.
1. Professional Eligibility Certificate (PEC) - Valid for five years
2.
Standard Professional Certificate I (SPC I) - Valid for five years
3.
Standard Professional Certificate II (SPC II) - Valid for five years
4.
Extended Standard Professional Certificate II (ESPC II) - Valid for three years
five.
Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) - Valid for five years
6.
Resident Teacher Certificate (RTC) - Valid for two years effective 01/01/07
7. Conditional Certificate (CC) - Valid for two years

FAILURE TO SATISFY RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL
CERTIFICATE WILL RESULT IN THE ISSUANCE OF A CONDITIONAL CERTIFICATE.
FAILURE TO
SATISFY RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR CONDITIONAL CERTIFICATE
WILL JEOPARDIZE YOUR EMPLOYMENT STATUS.
